Keeping up to date at Munich Airport

Germany’s second largest airport, the Franz-Josef Strauss Airport in Erding, northeast of Munich, uses a T-Systems display system, with approximately 2,750 screens, to guide and inform passengers and employees. The universal display system (UDS) is a vital source of facts and figures for a vast number of airport employees, government-agency officials, and an annual 35 million passengers. Michael Zaddach, Director of IT Services at the airport, highlights the solution’s advantages.

How important is a system such as UDS for a major airport?
Our passengers and employees need the system to provide accurate information. The airport’s reputation depends on the system’s reliability. It is therefore vital that the source applications provide all data in almost real time. Operational staff in particular needs this information so they can respond quickly to changing circumstances. Dependable, timely data is absolutely essential as Munich Airport guarantees minimum connection times between flights of at least 30 minutes.
How is UDS different from previous systems?
We have changed from just supplying flight information to providing a variety of media and content. The new system allows us to quickly and flexibly display passenger information in the check-in area, for example, or to tailor multimedia content to the specific needs of customers, such as airlines.
Does the new solution save money?
Definitely. Our two terminals used to have separate systems. By integrating the systems, we are significantly reducing our operational effort and expense. Moreover, we have completely standardized our hardware and software, and connect them using the airport’s existing network. This significantly cuts infrastructure costs, including maintenance and administration. Standardization enables us to modify or enhance the system at any time. If we extend one of the terminals, we would only have to install additional screens and display controller PCs. The information would be delivered by the existing system.
