Road Charging

Thanks to T-Systems’ know-how, Germany’s truck toll system has become a resounding success. The underlying satellite based technology has turned it into a bestselling export.
The German toll operator Toll Collect GmbH has not compromised when it comes to detection technology: Since the toll system’s flawless introduction in January 2005, Germany now takes pride in having the world’s most modern toll system – and a potential bestselling export item, as well. In contrast to conventional approaches, the “Road Charging” solution developed by T-Systems requires no major construction work (such as toll plazas), which reduces personnel costs and traffic jams. Thanks to GPS satellite technology, the position of any given vehicle – whether truck, car or boat – can be pinpointed in the blink of an eye. A built-in receiver – called the On Board Unit (OBU) – is all that is required. The OBU informs the Toll Collect central office via SMS when the truck is traveling on a toll road. Within a fraction of a second, high-tech control bridges are able to verify whether the truck actually pays the toll.
Tried and tested technology for the future
The major benefit is that the contact-free toll system has essentially no impact on the flow of traffic. It is also extremely reliable and fully automated – and still offers the full range of local control options. This sustainable solution can be expanded for other application areas – without costly investment in infrastructure.
